Perched on a dramatic hilltop above the narrowest gorge of the Jhelum River in Sudhnothi District, Azad Jammu & Kashmir, Ain Fort is one of Pakistan's most extraordinary and least-known heritage sites. Built in the pre-Mughal era — likely in the 14th century — from locally quarried sandstone, this ancient fort once guarded the border between the Punjab plains and the Princely State of Jammu & Kashmir.
Left abandoned after 1947, the fort stood in silence for nearly a century. Today, thanks to a pioneering conservation effort led by the Himalayan Wildlife Foundation (HWF), Ain Fort has been structurally stabilised and opened to visitors — offering an unparalleled window into a forgotten chapter of Kashmir's history.
